Elena Atlas is a painter in oils, acrylics, and watercolors. Her paintings
reflect themes of nature both real and imaginary. Many are done on location:
flowers, beach, and tropical scenes. She works in pen and ink, mixed media, and soft
sculpture. Recently she has painted on objects and fabrics, bringing a new dimension to
her work as a creative artist.
She has exhibited her work throughout the metropolitan area in such galleries as: Queens
College, St.John's University, Fordham, C.W. Post, Lever House, Cork Gallery-Lincoln
Center, Queens Museum, MetroTech Center, and AQA Art Center. She attended Skidmore
College, Syracuse University receiving a B.S. degree in Elementary Education, and attended
the M.S. program at Queens College. After many years of teaching children ages 5-11 years,
Elena became an arts administrator-her creative talents focused on AQA fulltime for over
16 years.
Elena is a founding member, past treasurer, and former Executive Director of the Alliance
of Queens Artists. Her background as an educator was instrumental in implementing
the Arts in Education programs for the AQA Art Center and outreach programs given to the
community. She is currently an active volunteer and advocate for the visual arts.
In her capacity as AQA Board Chairperson for Fundraising, she spends much time
coordinating all the activities for AQA's Annual Costume Ball and Souvenir Journal.
